A request for feedback in the March Program folder on the SinCNE website resulted in members expressing an interest in the idea of a three-part program devoted to the short form. The Board approved the proposal at the February SinCNE meeting. The first workshop, "The Introduction to Short Fiction Writing Program," kicks off on Saturday, March 20 at 3:00 PM.

Workshop 1: An introduction to short fiction. Speaker: Mark Lefebvre, Canadian thriller and horror writer. (Saturday, March 20 at 3:00 PM)

Mark has developed a talk for the emerging writer, the novelist, and those looking for an additional business model, answering the following questions: How can short stories help your writing career? What are the types of short stories? How do short stories help new writers improve their skills? How can short stories function as an additional income stream for novelists? How can short stories be a marketing tool? Mark recently gave the workshop at an event with Jane Friedman to rave reviews.

Mark Lefebvre is a published Canadian thriller and horror writer. Between 2011 and 2017, Mark worked as the Director of Self-Publishing and Author Relations for Kobo, where he was the driving force behind Kobo Writing Life. This free author/small-publisher-friendly platform publishes directly to Kobo's global catalog in 190 countries. By the end of 2016, Kobo Writing Life established itself as the #1 single source of weekly global unit sales for Kobo, resulting in one in every four eBooks sold. Mark has spoken professionally in the United States and Canada, in the UK, and across Europe, describing the vast and incredible opportunities for writers and publishers. You can learn more about Mark and find a listing of his work on his website: http://markleslie.ca/

Workshop 2: The craft of the short story. Speaker: Annie Reed, Multi-genre short story writer, novelist, and editor. (May 18, 2021 at 7:00 PM)

Annie will present a good beginning model for those new to short story writing and discuss how writing a short story differs from writing a novel. Her workshop could also suggest where to continue the study of short story writing. There will be discussion time for audience questions and comments at the end of the presentation.

Workshop 3: Business strategies of short fiction. Speaker: Douglas Smith, an award-winning, full-time, short fiction author. (September 23, 30, and October 7 at 7:00 PM)

Doug will be giving us a three-part class over three consecutive Thursdays. The three sessions build on each other. They include Playing the Short Game #1: How to Market & Sell Short Fiction; Playing the Short Game #2: You Sold a Story! Contracts, Editing, & Reality and Playing the Short Game #3: How to Make Your Short Fiction Work for You.

I sincerely hope you will join us for this comprehensive introduction to short stories. Learn how you can add this unique art form to your writing toolbox to develop your craft, supplement your writing income and sell more of your long fiction!
