Is TikTok a foreign language to you?  Something that only kids and “influencers” understand?  Well, like so much of social media, it has been relentlessly inching its way into our everyday lives.  Especially our writing lives. Publishers are now using “BookTok” to publicize new releases.  Several are even paying people to create TikTok content for their authors. But you don’t need to pay someone to create content for you!  You can do it yourself!

If this sounds interesting, please join me, Kim Herdman Shapiro, on August 14th at the Sturbridge Publick House.  I will be demonstrating how you, too, can get started with TikTok. We will also examine how other authors and publishers are using TikTok to publicize their work, how I have used TikTok to publicize my own project, “What the Hell is a Toque?”, and how we, as a community, can use TikTok to help support our own members.  One of the great things about TikTok is that these little snippets of video are an easy way to not only publicize your own work, but also highlight Sisters in Crime New England to a larger audience.

All that is required - if you wish to participate - is for you to download the TikTok app and create an account prior to the session. After my talk, we plan on people splitting off into smaller groups to try and create their own videos. Luckily, TikTok is a relatively easy platform to use and the less than a minute time limit means you won’t spend all day shooting something.  I will be floating amongst the groups to answer any questions.  Afterward, we can watch the short videos you will have uploaded to our Sisters in Crime TikTok account. Those who prefer to not participate in making videos are welcome to socialize in the tent.  This will be followed by a buffet luncheon.

As I am a new member of Sisters in Crime New England, it will be lovely to finally get a chance to see people in person.  Zoom meetings have their place, but a social outing after such a long period of isolation is definitely something to celebrate!

More information about the event at The Sturbridge Publick House (277 Main st., Sturbridge, MA) on August 14th, 10 - 2 pm can be found here.
